this is one of my favorite photoshop techniques. it can covert a boring photo into one that is very fabulous. i am including this texture for anyone to download under the creative commons license.
texture tutorial
1. open the photo that you desire to use the texture on.
2. open the texture that you desire to use.
3. copy and paste the texture on the photo.
a. select the texture
b. copy (ctrl+c) the texture
4. select the photo
5. paste (ctrl+v) the texture on the photo.
6. Resize or transform (Ctrl+T) the texture over the photo. when you are finished hit enter.
7. you have various ways to blend the texture on the photo blending modes. choose one that best suits your photo. i use overlay and hard light a lot.
8. now adjust the opacity level of the texture layer to bring the subject in the photo out more.
9. finally i generally remove or lower the texture blend over the subject.
a. create a layer mask on the texture layer.
b. select the paint brush tool.
c. make sure the foreground color is black to remove the texture completely or gray to lighten the blend of the texture layer.
d. paint in the layer mask the area you want to remove or lower the blend of the texture.
here is one where i used the leschick texture. it is my favorite.
