I am being interviewed by Char. I agreed to do this as long as she kept it painless–I think she has nailed it.
1. The world you live in is so different than my southern world with different but the same things. What is something that makes you so “Alaskan” and something you think we all have in common?
I would have to say the laid back manner we have in Alaska. When I was 17 years old I spent 3 months as a nanny in New Jersey and I remember how rushed it felt there. When I came to Alaska I found the opposite, life is slow paced here. Alaska is full of adventure and people put that first.
For the most part Alaska is the same as the lower 48. Living in bush Alaska you will see many differences but if you are on the road system it feels a lot like the lower 48.
2. I love seeing the world through your eyes. What has influenced your photography style and how has it changed over time. Where do you see it going?
I look at a lot of magazines and spend more time on flickr than I dare own up to. =] Most of my influences come from flickr. I am very new to photography so it is really hard to say where I see it going because all I can think of right now is finding my style and improving. To find my style and improve I have to be bold and brave. I am trying to focus on that this year.
3. What was your favorite activity when you were a child and why.
Camping with my father. It was a time when the outside world did not penetrate our world. We would fish, raft, hike, and hang out around the fire. As I entered my teenage years I decided I hated camping with my dad. I still hold a little guilt for that. I have such fond memories from our camping trips. I guess it gives me hope that one day my teenage kids will grow up and have fond memories of our family time. =]
4. Give us lots of lovely, lovely details about your dream “vacation”.
Think warm. Right now my dream vacation includes warm weather. I would love to go to Peru and do one of those service vacations. My family is far from convinced this would be fun but I think it would be so fun to work in orphanages and schools. I want the job of holding the babies that don’t get held. My husband is convinced we would come home with babies in our luggage. While you are there you get to see places like Lima, Machu Picchu, Inca ruins and I hear there is an energy you can feel while you are there.
5. Who is your most admired woman ever and why?
Grandma Slaughter, my husband’s grandmother, she was a kind and compassionate woman. She took me in and made me her own. All I heard when I was dating Gordon was about his wonderful grandma and it did not take me long to figure out how wonderful she was for myself.
In my married life I spent a lot of time with her and I learned all kinds of wonderful things about her. Her friends would drop by to visit her and enlighten me. In the LDS religion the women visit teach every month, the goal being that everyone had some contact each month. She was the one that visiting teachers reported their numbers to and if there was ever someone who did not get visited she would go out and do it herself. They had perfect numbers for 3 years and later they found out why. Women started reporting that Grandma Slaughter was the one visiting them. The single mother told how Grandma Slaughter made her a quilt and dolls for her little girls when she had no money for Christmas. Sisters received meals when they were ill.
And don’t forget to give out the rules when you put your interview together:
1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. (I get to pick the questions).
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
🙂 I learned new things about you today – that’s always fun to do with new friends. I grew up such a city girl I never got into camping that much. But I love being out for the day. I also love the description of your admired woman. So warm and wonderful.
Love the interview. And I’ve never come across a grandmother’s name like your hubby’s… it’s really unique.
Great questions (of course) and great answers!
i love these interview posts others are doing. it’s nice to learn more about our blogger friends this way. One of my favorite memories growing up is also all the camping trips we went on. Every vacation we traveled to different places – we drove and camped along the way instead of fly and staying in motels – it’s much better way to experience the world in my book.
Your Peru dream sounds exciting. i bet you do it.
This is super cute, you can interview me if you feel like thinking up five questions for someone you don’t even know!
